The Green Barbecue

I have a love hate relationship with summer. Most particularly, I love summer for its great barbeques but I hate excessive heat… what can you do?

So despite summer being all of two seconds, it still August and this is a month where we have to be careful about the actions we commit to the environment. August is hot. We’re tempted to be less careful with water conservation, we are using the AC more than ever, driving around rather than using public transport no one cares about things like green house gases or paperless solutions because it’s just too gosh darned sunny! Well I am human too and I will be the first one to tell you, being eco-friendly is harder in summer than winter but even so, there are some things we can do to make our summer barbeque just a bit eco-friendly.

1. Grill it the green way:

Opt for a gas or electric grill. Charcoal is all well and good, it gives the meat this rustic, woody flavour but did you know that charcoal is harmful to the environment? Electric grills are more efficient and less harmful to the planet, so if you can, swap out that charcoal, carbon monoxide grill for a much more eco-friendly one.

2. Don’t inconvenience mother earth with your plastic:

Plastic disposable plates and cups aren’t the future of convenience. Paperless solutions are the future of convenience. Yes it makes cleaning up so much easier because you don’t want to wash a mountain of breakable glass plates. You’d rather just throw away the plastic plates, cups and cutlery. Well do I have good news for you. You don’t have to give any of that up to go eco friendly. For was low as $35 you can buy a pack of 400 100% biodegradable and 100% compostible cups right here on amazon. There are also 100% biodegradable disposable plates and cutlery also on amazon. You can buy these to stock up for any future barbeques you might have down the line.

3. Get rid of pesky bugs without harming your surroundings:

Mosquitoes are the bane of my existence during hot summer months. I hate- hate them, and for good reason too. It is normal to want to spray insecticides so that you can get rid of pesky insects but did you know they contain ingredients harmful to the environment? A great alternative to insect repellent is one without these harmful chemicals. One example is bugband. In a statement from bugband the described the benefits of using their insect repellent as opposed to the many others on the market.

“According to laboratory and field studies by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Geraniol, the naturally-derived active ingredient in BugBand Insect Repellent, has been proven effective in repelling a wide variety of insects, including mosquitoes, house flies, stable flies, horn flies, fire ants, fleas, gnats, dog ticks, lone star ticks, and no-see-ums. This means that BugBand GERANIOL Insect Repellent makes a great naturally-derived alternative to DEET insect repellents.”
