Food 3.0
Have you ever had a bunch of stats just thrown in your face? Like bam! There it is! Here you go. No? Well get ready cause I’m about to throw some numbers around.
Nine billion people will inhabit the earth before the next three decades. Fact. Right now we are at seven billion pushing to eight. Food production has to double if we are going to sustain human life at a reasonable level.
So what is food 3.0? It's just urban farming. It’s an ingenious idea its so simple it makes me wonder why even I didn’t think about it. Paperless solutions are important and well companies do need to go paperless to see some real eco progress but what good is a paperless solution to a hungry man? Nothing… I wouldn’t care about paperless… anything if I were starving or the cost of food was so high that I could barely afford it.
If this were ten thousand (10,000) years ago I wouldn’t need to worry. People didn’t need to worry about food because the population was less than two billion and there was more than enough to go around but today the agricultural industry has “boomed” along with the population yet animals and plants are becoming extinct with each passing day, so as we're increasing our resources are depleting. In the future what we have will not be enough. Which brings us to food 3.0: Urban Farming. The food 3.0 project hopes to meet very ambitious yet feasible goals
- Eliminating production losses: Weather, disease, pests, fertility, and spoilage reduce crop yields by up to 75%. Controlling the growing environment will aid in making huge yield increases.
- Drastically reducing non- renewable inputs in agriculture: Combining renewable energy and precision water systems with controlled environment technologies can reduce dependence on non-renewable inputs energy, water and chemicals.
- Optimizing plants for low-input production: Advances in genomics, molecular biology and physiology make it possible to optimize plants for high yields in low-input environments.”
By creating these mini environments in which food can be grown in the urban areas i.e. your city apartment, your balcony almost anywhere they are effectively increasing the amount of food production enough for families and individuals in the future. I have to say, the future is looking pretty bright at the moment.
