The Winners
Hello Tennis fans! It’s the paper-less advocate again here.
Anyone who followed the full Australian open and read my other article knows that it really was the underdogs’ time to shine in the open this year. Congratulations to both Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na who won in the men’s and women’s respectively. In the final match against Rafael Nadal, people expect Nadal to win the Australian open and “he had it in the bag” but honestly, I knew he didn’t. Nadal sustained an injury to his feet, in the form of a severe blister yet he refused to quit the Australian open despite this. The situation already put him at a handicap and an obvious disadvantage.
Stanislas himself said he didn’t expect to win the open,
“To win a Slam, to be number three [in the rankings], both for me is a big surprise, It's an amazing feeling. I saw Roger winning so many Grand Slams in the past, so now it's my turn to win one. If you look at the 10 past years, except Del Potro, it's only the top four guys who were winning all the Grand Slams.”
And he’s right. For the past ten years, the title has only passes between Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. This year was the first year since 2009 that any tennis player out of the big four (Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal) has won a grand slam title.
This means that my predictions that I shared in the last article weren’t so far off point.
In the women’s section, Li Na really rose to the challenge this year. She has been in the Australian open finals twice now but this year it was her time to not only get to the finals but also win the grand slam title. In an intense match against Dominika Cibulkova, Li Na came out triumphant.
Although I say that this is the underdog’s open, I have a feeling that paired against people like Azarenka, Sharapova or Williams, she would be able to firmly hold her own against those players. For this is not her first grand slam title. She did win the French open in 2011.
Asides winning, I think she gave one of the best winner’s speeches I’ve heard in while, light hearted, humble, grateful and humorous, not forgetting to thank her agent, coach and physiotherapist either and even teasing her husband a little.
“So thanks for him give up everything just traveling with me to be my hitting partner, fix the drinks, fix the racket. So thanks a lot, you are a nice guy. Also you are so lucky, find me”
So for all you tennis fans, also hopefully paper-free eco-activists, what do you think about the wins in the women’s’ and men’s section of the Australian open? Did Wawrinka win on merit or was part of it luck?
