The Oscars
This year has been very eventful, despite the fact that we’re just in the beginning of it, especially in the world of entertainment. Now running a paperless blogs, with ideas like saving the world from global degeneration and deforestation hardly leaves me time to write about things like ‘Celebrities’ and the ‘Oscars’, but really, I would not be able to call myself a true fan of great movies if I let my words and opinions about this year’s Academy Awards go unwritten. So putting my paperless ambitions aside, we will delve for a minute into the world of ‘The Oscars’
Gravity swept… everything away with 10 nominations and seven wins; I did not think I’d ever see so many awards go to one movie. Most of the awards did however edge closer to the technical side of things, such as best film effects, best cinematography, best score, best director so if you’re one that appreciates master crafted pieces of exquisite visual work I would safely say that gravity is the movie for you.
Yet another interesting thing that happened was American Hustle, with 10 nominations just like Gravity, but their similarities end there, as they weren’t so lucky. Failing to win even one of the categories it was nominated for, American Hustle left the awards with nothing much to show for. This was quite surprising to me however because I did watch American Hustle and I thought it’d win at least two for sure in the areas of supporting cast and costume design.
Leonardo Dicaprio was once again snubbed this year of another Oscar that I believed was rightfully his’. This isn’t coming from a biased point of view, but I thought that he deserved it more than Matthew did. If people could win awards for getting nominations… lets just say we know who that would go to.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman did win an award… a rather interesting award that has sparked some controversy in the streets of New York. Its not new news that Academy Award winning actor died earlier on this year of a heroin and cocaine over dose, however a street artist did put up an 8-foot sculpture for many to see, and many did see, depicting an Oscar statue injecting itself with what we can safely assume are drugs.
This piece has got mixed reviews some commend him in bringing the problem of substance abuse by celebrities to light while others said simply “You disgust me”.
Although a bit crude I did like the message, which it got across: Drugs are a serious problem and hiding it wont make anything go away.
