If not for the Environment, then for You

When I talk and talk, and talk about saving the planet, going paperless, implementing methods of making your office and home paperless I sometimes feel like I’m talking to a brick wall. I’m not saying that you’re a brick wall, its more like, I feel no one cares what I say and the thought is quite discouraging really but I’m going to talk some more.

When I say save the planet, I don’t mean save the planet because earth needs your help, earth does not need us, the earth has seen the rise and fall of empires, the most horrific wars, the big bang, the extinction of different species planet, its seen everything, even God hovering over it’s surface, trust me, the earth will be just fine without us. In fact if the human race were extinct, things might get better for the planet, nature will “Happy days are here again!” over time everything in the earth will regain its true balance. No more carbon emissions, deforestation, killing of animals, lakes, rivers and oceans will once again regain their volume and fossil fuels given a few million years will once again be embedded in the earth, and well, the earth will still be here. But you wont.

So I’m going to take a moment and appeal to your selfish side here. Your really selfish side, the one that cares about only you: the side that thinks: what difference does it actually make to the planet? I’m not going to point out the fact that it does make a huge difference, especially multiplied by the billions of people in the world. Nope, I’m just going to ask you two questions. Do you want you and your children to have a future? Do you want to save money? If the answer is yes then listen closely, the only way we can have these things is by changing the way we treat the planet, paying close attention to our eco system.

We have to conserve resources by reusing, replenish by recycling, and prevent destruction of our resources by finding alternate means. If we carry on the way we’re doing now, we’ll barely make it the next fifty years, and it’ll be a miracle if we get to the next century unscathed. The earth’s temperature is rising and if it does increase by even a degree Celsius, the results will be disastrous, Nobel laureates; renowned scientists are moving the doomsday clock closer to midnight, once it gets to midnight that signifies the “end of the world as we know it”. This means that generations to come might not even meet a habitable planet and it will end up being the end of humanity, as we know it.

Saving money is a plus side of being conservative, when you reduce the use of certain things you wont have to spend as much on things like water bills, electricity bills, paper. You could conserve gas in your car by cycling. Going paperless with various apps ensures that you wont spend so much money printing, photocopying etc. getting energy saver light bulbs which last much longer than the regular ones saves you on electricity and eventually the amount of money you save on light bulbs cause they wont have to be replaced as much.

So I’m appealing to your selfish side, because everyone has one, there are obvious benefits of going green, aside from the ones to the planet, so why not do it? For you.
